Description

The inspiration for this first debate comes from a 2023 article by Worklife. Here’s part of what it said: “An effective learning and development program can be a powerful tool companies can use to keep their people engaged and motivated - or to have their people stay with them even. A survey by edX and Workplace Intelligence, including responses from over 800 knowledge workers and 800 C-suite executives found that about 40% of workers said they’ll likely leave their company in the next year for a role with better L&D opportunities. That number went up to 50% for Gen Z and Millennial workers. Workers also think that L&D opportunities should be a given. 84% of respondents said they expect their employer to offer the training and education they need to keep their skillset up to date. And yet, simply having an L&D program in place doesn’t cut it. According to the article by Worklife, one of the most important success factors for L&D programs is providing recognition and rewards that incentivise learning. If incentives aren’t aligned, employees will feel like the company’s L&D program is disconnected from the actual skills needed to progress in the organization and unlock career opportunities. And so, we get to our first statement of today: “L&D programs without recognition and rewards are a waste of time."
